Youth Football Helmet Fitting: What to Expect at a No-Appointment Fitting

A football helmet that "sorta fits" isn't good enough. A proper youth football helmet fitting is one of the most important steps in getting your athlete ready for the season. Bring them to Jonquil Sporting Goods, and we'll make sure they leave with equipment that fits the way it should. If we can't achieve the proper fit with one of the helmets we carry, we'll tell you. We'd rather help you find the right helmet than sell you the wrong one. Our goal isn't to sell every helmet—it's to make sure every athlete is wearing one that fits correctly. No appointment is necessary, and most families are in and out in about 15 minutes.

Why Proper Fit Matters More Than Brand

Parents often ask which football helmet is "the best." The answer is simple: the best helmet is the one that fits your athlete's head correctly. A helmet that shifts during play—or one that constantly needs adjusting—can't perform the way it was designed to.

At Jonquil Sporting Goods, we stock Riddell youth football helmets and professionally fit athletes in all major brands. Every player has a different head shape, and finding the proper fit is far more important than choosing a particular logo.

We stock helmets approved for players through 8th grade, which covers the vast majority of the families we serve. High school and college helmets are typically purchased directly by schools and organizations, but that doesn't mean we stop there. If you already have a helmet, bring it in. We'll be happy to check the fit, make adjustments when possible, and help make sure it's fitting the way it should.

Families from Smyrna, Marietta, Vinings, Mableton, Austell, Powder Springs, Kennesaw, Acworth, and throughout the northwest Atlanta area have trusted Jonquil Sporting Goods to fit football equipment for decades.

Whether it's your child's first season or they're preparing for varsity football, we'll take the time to make sure their helmet fits correctly—because when it comes to protection, proper fit always comes first.

What Happens During a Helmet Fitting at Jonquil

Walk in anytime during store hours—no appointment necessary—and one of our experienced staff members will professionally fit your athlete's helmet. With more than 100 years of combined sporting goods experience, our staff has fit thousands of football players over the years.

We start by selecting the helmet size that looks right for your athlete, then fine-tune the fit from there. We'll make sure the helmet sits properly, check jaw pad contact, adjust the chin strap, and ensure the helmet fits securely without excessive movement. If the fit isn't right, we'll simply try a different size or make any necessary adjustments until it is.

The entire fitting process is free, usually takes just a few minutes, and gives parents the confidence that their athlete is leaving with a helmet that fits the way it was designed to.

Signs Your Football Helmet Fit Needs Attention

Kids grow fast—and sometimes it happens between seasons, sometimes it happens in the middle of one. If you're noticing any of these signs, stop by the store and let us take a look. A proper fit only takes a few minutes.

  • The helmet moves when your athlete shakes their head.
  • The chin strap is fully adjusted and still won't stay snug.
  • Your player complains that the helmet feels too tight, too loose, or just "doesn't feel right."
  • You notice red spots or pressure points after practice or games.
  • The helmet seems harder to put on than it used to.
  • It's been a season or two since the last fitting.
  • You're just not sure. We'd much rather spend five minutes checking the fit than have you wondering if it's right.

Helmet fit checks are always free at Jonquil Sporting Goods. No appointment needed—just walk in, and we'll make sure your athlete is ready to play safely.

Don't Forget the Shoulder Pads

A proper football helmet fitting should also include shoulder pad fitting. If you're buying shoulder pads too, we'll make sure they're the right size and fit your athlete correctly as well. Our staff has been fitting football equipment for decades, so we'll help you find the right size without the trial and error.

Come in, get fitted, and leave knowing your athlete is ready for the season.
